When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I had a couple of different dream jobs when I was younger including delivering babies and styling hair. I know it sounds weird to go from wanting to be a doctor to wanting to do something really artistic like styling hair, but it never occurred to me that I couldnt do either one. Finally, I wanted to be a teacher. It has taken me a while, but I will finish my degree in Education this December and I can't wait to get into a classroom!
What was the best course you took in school that helps you today in your career?
English/Language Arts and Public Speaking classes were the most valuable courses I took in school. I truly believe the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing are the two most important skills anyone can possess. What was the BEST course I took in school, though? I LOVED art history!
What do you do for fun?
I like to run, spend time with my family, and read, of course!
Do you have any hints for girls as they select a career?
Be passionate, be fearless, and be determined. You can do anything you set your mind to if you are willing to work hard enough!
What are your favorite books to read over the summer?
I just love reading! Some of my favorites are Anna Karenina, Howard's End, Pride and Prejudice, Jude the Obscure, and Gone With the Wind. None of those books are exactly what I'd call light reading, but they are all worth the time and effort, trust me!

I don't really consider myself a person with a message, but if I had one it would be this ITS NEVER TOO LATE TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE. YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Pick a career that you would love to do everyday
"Mutant Message Down Under" by Marlo Morgan
I think that to succeed in your career you need to choose a profession that you have a passion for and would love to do every day.
I changed my mind several times about what I wanted to be when I grew up, but my top three choices were a teacher, a writer or a computer programmer.
The most helpful course in college was Public Relations Writing.
I enjoy spending time with my 12-year old niece and watching her play volleyball. I also enjoy volunteering in the community.
Be honest with yourself about what interests you most and be open to career options that you may not have considered. I did not know about the profession of public relations, but I knew that I enjoyed writing, public speaking, planning and being strategic. I am thankful to my mom for suggesting that I study public relations.
I recommend Cold Sassy Tree. It's been a favorite of mine for many years.

Public Speaking & English classes
Go to sporting events, run, read, & travel!
Don't ever feel like you have to be in a stereotypical career just because society encourages you to. Choose whatever makes you happy... something you would do for free. That way you can wake up everyday & be happy to go to work!
Huge fan of all the Harry Potter & Twilight books!
Reading played a huge role in my youth & helped me grow in so many ways. I wasn't the most popular kid growing up so reading was my escape to better worlds of imagination and allowed me to be anybody I wanted to! Books never judge you, they entertain you & expand your mind! Reading is fabolous!
Carol Gillingham
Elementary School Teacher
I have been working with small groups of struggling readers (K-5th), but in the fall will teach a class of kindergarteners.
I decided I wanted to be a teacher when I was 5 years old, before I had even started school. I never seriously considered any other field.
Because I teach all subjects, EVERY class that I took in school is beneficial to me. Though kindergarten students may not seem to need higher level math, science, history, etc., they are building the foundation of their education. They are exposed to everything, so I have to know the various areas of study well enough to be able give them an introduction that will ignite their passion for learning.
I have a passion for reading, baseball, history, musical theater, and travel. Whenever possible I combine my passions into amazing road trips to see various portions of the USA. I only have 8 more states until I will have visited all 50!
Find your passion, then see how you can make it into a career. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Read everything you can about what you love.
Your favorite book to read over the summer? One??? I will try to narrow it down to a few. I am really enjoying a nonfiction book on child development called Yardsticks, but I have also just finished revisiting a few old friends:The Little Princess, and the Charlie Bone series.

Owner of a ecologically friendly packaging manufacturer
Currently I serve as President of a packaging company I founded in the mid 90's and I also serve as marketing officer in a text-messaging communications company I founded in 2005. I serve on the board of directors for two local service organizations; Communities in Schools Houston & Pink Ribbons Project.
Growing up I enjoyed being part of service organizations and leadership teams, in school government and in church groups -- and as I got older I decided I should be an entrepreneur.
Any type of history courses have helped me -- learning that others before us have faced challenges and have overcome them provides good support for solving problems in business or in life.
I love to run, bike and read -- both to myself and to my young children.
Prepare as if you are running the organization -- think through all of the positions and their respective roles so that you can learn broadly and be qualified and ready when new opportunities arise.
Any book by Scott O'Dell. Growing up my absolute favorite book was Island of the Blue Dolphins and I have re-read it many times. Scott O'Dell writes of historical figures so that while enjoying a story you are learning about a time and place that played a large role in our world's development.
Gia Huff Guidry
Photographer
I am a mother of 3 and I enjoy a creative, flexible career as a photographer. Photography allows me to work from home while putting my creative energies to good use. It's an ever-evolving field that keeps me on my toes. I LOVE it! I also love knowing how to take great pictures of my children and all the people who are dear to me.
Thanks for including me in this... that's all I really wanted when I was a girl... to be accepted and included :)
When I was a girl, I thought I'd like to be an attorney because everyone said I was good at arguing. I also loved theater so I dreamed of being an actress performing on Broadway. As I grew through high school, I worked in marketing at our local mall and I loved marketing. So, I decided to go to college for marketing then earn enough money to open my own dinner theater where I'd be the star in all the shows :) Once in college I really knew that what I wanted most was a family and children. I always loved children and did lots of babysitting growing up. So, I switched my major to elementary education and went on to teach for a few years until I had two children of my own.
The art history classes I took in college helped to train my eye toward good composition. I love studying great art. When I was a teacher, I used lots of art lessons to keep school interesting for my students. I also think that loving children and learning how to work with them helps me today to be a good mother and to engage the children I photograph.
For fun, I love to TALK!!! I love to get together with friends and visit for hours! I also love movies, reading, swimming, going to the beach (that's a big favorite!) and of course... taking pictures. Sometimes I take pictures for no reason just to see if I can photograph someone or something in a unique and creative way that maybe no one has ever thought of before. It's a great thing when what you do for a living is also what you'd choose to do even if you're not getting paid for it!
When choosing a career, think of what you are very interested in. What do you like to do. What do you LOVE to do? You can look back to the past and see what things you've been interested in all along. Don't be afraid to change your mind about what you should do as you get older, that's a big part of life and growing up. Listen to your impulses. If you feel like trying a class ... you should try it! All of your talents and history will come together in the the work that you eventually do! Always remember, there is enough work in every different field for everyone to be doing exactly what they want to do. No one should do work that makes them miserable. You never have to accept that for your life. Insist on choosing work that makes your heart happy.
HMMM My favorite summer books are old classics. I love the old language and the slow pace to the books, they feel sleepy and lazy like summer to me :) A few recent favorite were The Woman in White, Jane Eyre, andEast of Eden.
A pediatrician
Of course science courses, but also math (even though I didn't care for it)
Cook, watch movies, hang out with friends
Do something you have a great interest or passion about. Look for a career that will allow you to pursue other passions in life. Nursing is a great career because: 1) You will always be needed. 2) you can get a job anywhere. You can even take positions where you work for short periods of time in different cities. 3) It's flexible, so when you have a family or want to travel, you can adjust your work schedule. 4) You can do everything from direct patient care to executive level management. The possibilites are endless.
Summer is a great time to read. Sometimes I'll read magazines (travel, cooking, fitness/beauty) if I want to keep it light. I like to read nonfiction in the summer. I'm rereading The Awaking by Kate Chopin which is one of my favorites. Classics are also a good summer read. Anything that exercises your mind and imagination or just lets you escape for awhile.
