When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up.
What was the best course you took in school that helps you today in your career?
Science and math courses helped me learn the foundation of knowledge that led me into this field. In graduate school I took a course called "Judging Science" and I apply a lot of the philosophies we learned in that class to my current position.
What do you do for fun?
I love spending time with my family, reading, gardening, playing with my dog and 2 cats, and I love live music festivals and concerts.
Do you have any hints for girls as they select a career?
My best advice for girls as they research their career is to learn what subjects they enjoy in school and begin to research various professions that utilize those strengths. Each experience will help them decide the next direction and subsequently, lead them to next experience.
Above all, I would encourage girls to learn to love learning and expanding their knowledge. You can do anything you set your mind to if you have a good educational foundation, and love of learning.
What are your favorite books to read over the summer?
I always read multiple books at once usually from different genres. However, this summer, I'm most looking forward to reading Ayn Rand's Virtue of Selfishness.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
a teacher
What was the best course in school you took that helps you today?
All of my English classes. And a typing class in ninth grade was particularly useful along the way.
Read.
Choose a career that you think you will love. Don't choose something just to make money. Don't limit yourself to what you think of as jobs for women. Aim high. Be prepared for opportunities (as in have a college degree whether you think you will use it or not). Don't turn down a job you think you're too good for. It might lead to something you love.
Your favorite book to read over the summer?
Books in the Disc World series by Terry Pratchett are a lot of fun to read and good to take to the beach. Books by Christopher Moore are a lot of fun, too.
Lauren Lovell
Public Relations Manager at Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) non-profit musical theatre company
I've always loved to read and write, and I've always loved clever or funny commercials. Boring commercials are bad, but occasionally you see one that really makes you laugh or think. In high school, I thought it would be fun to work at an advertising agency and write creative commercials.
English class has definitely been the most helpful. It was my favorite class in school, and really the only subject I did well. I use those skills every day at work writing press releases, and sending ideas to our news partners. If you cant express yourself clearly in a written email, youll have a very hard time in todays work environment. Even if your ideas are crazy, people will consider them if you express them well. Most of what I do each day is a variation of persuasive writing.
For fun, I love to cook for friends or try new restaurants. I love yoga, walking my dog and checking out farmers markets. I still LOVE to read and just joined my first book club!
Don't be afraid to volunteer. Chances are if its a job you wouldnt volunteer for you wont enjoy doing it for a paycheck either. Volunteering is a great way to build up your resume and get experience in your relevant field. For example: if you want to be an event planner, volunteer to help an event planner. Tell everyone what you want to do. You never know how they might play into your life. If you do what you love, youll be good at it. Don't do anything by default do it because you want to do it. Youre never trapped and you always have choices. If you dont like what youre doing, try something else. It's OK if you dont love your first job; sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right fit.

Use your natural curiosity to find what interests you. When you discover something that you become obsessed with (in a healthy way of course), follow it. When you are doing what you enjoy the most, it doesn't feel like work!

I wanted to be an architect. I loved the fact that artistic designs could originate from physics and mathematical concepts.
As a finance major, my current position does not correlate much with my formal education. If I knew where I'd end up, I would have taken more anatomy and physiology classes! My finance classes instilled in me a great work ethic and critical thinking skills, which I use every day.
I love to travel both to places I've never been and also to visit friends who live in many different parts of the country.
Keep your options open. I remember feeling frustrated when I had to choose a major and limit my studies and career path to a single field. Think of your education as more of a way to show others how you learn and how your brain works rather than an exact definition of what you want to do for the rest of your life. If you have a great foundation of knowledge and are willing to keep learning throughout your career, you can be anything you want to be.
I love all of the vampire themed books that are so popular right now. I have read the Twilight, Sookie Stackhouse and House of Night series and all of them are great!

I like to play with my daughter, Lauren, drink wine, read books, travel and go on long walks.
It is okay to not know what you want to do when you get older. Keep trying out new things and keep an open mind. You may have to eliminate a lot of things you dont like before you find what you do.
Right now I am reading The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver and I am loving it!
