When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
As a young girl, I was always playing office, school, art gallery, bank - anything business related. I would create storefronts, forms, cash receipts...I also wanted to be a fashion designer and fashion model.
What was the best course you took in school that helps you today in your career?
Math and English It is best to practice your math skills (as well as some basic accounting) and be a good written (and verbal) communicator.
What do you do for fun?
Travel, watch movies, read non-fiction books about business, marketing, money management, etc., take my kids to the playground or bike riding
Do you have any hints for girls as they select a career?
Stay true to your heart. Follow your passion and what you are good at as well as enjoy. You are only limited by your own mind; the possibilities are endless.
If you have passion and desire, teach yourself as much as you can about your profession, be willing to always be the student, look to mentor and serve others as well. Givers gain!!!
What are your favorite books to read over the summer?

I own my own business (Monica Rhodes Unlimited). I'm a consultant, providing public relations, marketing, event planning, photography and community outreach services. Before starting my own business, I had ten years of experience; I've worked at a public relations firm; managed the Houston Museum District and a transportation management organization; and did PR for The Children's Museum of Houston. My degree is from Texas State University, I majored in Public Relations and Mass Communications and minored in Speech Communications.
Another word of advice - I encourage girls to be very involved in their community. Volunteer work is very important; give back to the community as much as possible. Find a cause or two that resonate with you and get involved. Networking will occur naturally, and that's one of the keys to success. Many times in life, what you know will get you to a certain point, but who you know will really make a difference. Never burn bridges, treat everyone with respect; and always maintain a positive attitude.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a doctor when I was little and then a physician's assistant when I got a little older (but still in school). Overall, I wanted to go into the medical field. I took all sorts of medical and health classes when I was in High School, and was a volunteer at my local hospital. When I got into college, I had a change of heart and decided to pursue a communications degree and career.
What was the best course in school you took that helps you today?
English was my best subject and definitely helped me with my career - writing, grammar, spelling are key in the communications field.
I love traveling, taking pictures, reading, spending time with friends and family, bike riding, rollerblading, swimming, watching movies, amusement parks and shopping. A day full of any combination of these activities is my idea of fun.
Follow your heart; you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. Dream big dreams. Whatever you decide to do career wise, fully explore your options and choices, get as much experience as you can in that field or area so you can make sure that's what you really want to do. Volunteer, get internships, do whatever you have to do and soak up as much experience as possible. Take initiative, be innovative and creative. People will notice your persistence, drive and ambition. Even if you are working for free, know that you are getting invaluable experience; you'll get out of it as much as you put into it. Give every experience and opportunity your all; treat every experience as a valuable learning experience.
Your favorite book to read over the summer?
I love reading fiction books. My favorite authors are Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult, Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown, V.C. Andrews and Danielle Steel. I just read the Time Travelers Wife. And I really enjoyed the Twilight series books.

Typing! It is one skill that I literally use every day.
I love to read a good book where I can just lose myself in a different place or time.
If you really think you want to be a vet (or teacher or whatever), visit one, and see if you can do an internship or spend some time with them during a regular day to find out what its really like to hold that position. You might love it or find out that it really isn't for you. Ask lots of questions. Remember that a positive attitude is your best asset.
During the summer, I like to read fun stuff: romance novels, thrillers, science fiction, and cookbooks. I love to cook, and some cookbooks have such great history in them. I don't think I have a single favorite, but if I had to choose, it would probably be something by Nora Roberts

Research the career you are considering and interview people in those fields. It is important to truly understand as much as you can about a career before spending the time and money pursuing a degree that gets you to your goal. It is good to volunteer to work at careers you are considering to determine if your choice is right for you. I also recommend you honestly review your strengths and weaknesses to determine if you have the innate skills to go the distance. Ask for help, counseling, guidance and you will receive it.

I like to play with my daughter, Lauren, drink wine, read books, travel and go on long walks.
It is okay to not know what you want to do when you get older. Keep trying out new things and keep an open mind. You may have to eliminate a lot of things you dont like before you find what you do.

What did you want to be when you grew
When I grew up I wanted to be a person contributing to society, who experienced the richness of life. A writer traveling and telling stories that would be written for magazines. An architect building places for people to create their lives in. A chef who created awesome dishes for people to savor.
The best classes in school that helped me to do what I do today were the Community Service classes. And the English writing classes.
For fun I Dance, Play with family, Enjoy the outdoors and Read books by great authors.
The best tip I can give others is to Trust yourself and Enjoy the moment!
