When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was in high school I wanted to be a veternarian because I love animals.
What was the best course you took in school that helps you today in your career?
Language Arts
What do you do for fun?
I love to be outdoors, and when I am unable to be outside I love to read!
Do you have any hints for girls as they select a career?
Pick a career that you love! Don't think necessarily about the pay, but think about whether or not the career you pick is something that you would be happy and/or excited about going to every day. If waking up with the thought that you HAVE to go to work and you aren't happy about it, then it's not worth it!
What are your favorite books to read over the summer?
I love books dealing with the historical aspect of the Salem Witch Trials (be it fiction or non-fiction), so I will be keeping my eyes open for a book that catches my fancy!
Kelly Wadyko
7th grade English Teacher
I am studying to become a Librarian because of my love of reading!
Vernecia Sims Webster
Telecommunications Officer / Training Coordinator at the Caddo Parish Sheriffs Office in Shreveport, LA
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a professional singer or broadcast journalist.
Many courses throughout school will help you with this position. Specifically, English and Typing. Another great one for this particular position is psychology.
I still enjoy singing, writing poetry, spending time with my family and reading.
Don't limit yourself. If there is something you want to do, find out more about it. For example if you want to be a journalist, call the local newspaper and TV station and ask what they did to get to their position. Ask them if they really enjoy it. If there are programs at your school, participate.
One I really remember and enjoyed as a young girl was "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry." I read a lot of romance, Religious fiction and the Bible now. Reading opens up windows to experiences you may never have.

Senior Account Executive & Director of Social Media for Dancie Perugini Ware Public Relations
Our firm is a small boutique firm that caters to many multimarket clients including Simon Property Group and H-E-B Grocery. In my current position, I lead multifaceted public relations campaigns, provide counsel for crisis communications issues, and offer creative strategies to reach the comunity. I also work on special events with Mayor's office one of which is Houston's official Fourth of July event, Freedom Over Texas with Fireworks presented by Shell.
When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a gymnast. It's funny that I would choose a profession that requires so much physical balance because I'm probably one of the most clumsy people around!
English and Writing were the most importants courses for me all through my academic career. From writing short stories in the 6th grade to 15-page research papers in my communications classes in college, I worked hard to be my own editor and provide gripping, intelligent copy. Admittedly, I've always had a passion for writing, but as I've grown into my professional career, I've realized that I truly love it.
I'm a water baby! I love being at the beach, the lake, the pool - anywhere that provides a beautiful landscape and a nice cushion to reach a good book. I also enjoy watching my fiance's band, The Texas Toast, play at venues around the city.
The most important piece of advice I can offer is to find your passion. If you like riding horses or making arts & crafts then do it to your fullest. As a teenager, I spent too much time worrying about what everyone was doing around me that I didn't realize what I wanted to be when I grew up. Thankfully I found my way and now I work in an industry that is both challenging and incredibly fulfilling.
I loved reading the Anne of Green Gables series when I was a kid. It is one of my favorite book series of all time! I also love biographies and short stories.

Owner of Pigtail Pals - Redefine Girly
I am a work-at-home mom and I own and operate Pigtail Pals, an empowering product line for girls. I also write a pretty feisty blog called "Redefine Girly". When my daughter was a baby I saw a huge need for change in the girls' marketplace. I launched the company in 2009 and am passionate about ending gender stereotypes and sexualization in childhood. I am dedicated to changing the way we look at girlhood. Our girls deserve better.

When I was in grade school, my dream was to be Wonder Woman or a whale trainer at Sea World. In Junior High that gave way to an obsession with becoming a criminal profiler for the FBI, which lasted all the way into my 20's as I worked as an investigator.
Mr. Dellger's high school English and Composition. I write a lot for my business, and there is a delicate balancing act to being simultaneously eloquent and concise. It should be known I am a horrible speller. I still use the same pocket dictionary my uncle gave me in 5th grade. In college I took a Cultural Studies and Comparative Lit class that changed the way I think, and turned me on to Media Literacy.
I love hiking, gardening, and reading. I always enjoy going bonkers at the park with my kiddos. I look forward to dinners with my girlfriends where we laugh till we cry.
Before you select a career, learn how to give a proper handshake and introduce yourself. Upon completion of that, choose a path that will challenge you and leave you feeling full of life. Job shadow or intern with people whose careers you find interesting. Never settle because something is the 'appropriate' thing to do. The world is a very big place and there is certainly a place for you in it. This quote has led my life since the day I tore it from a magazine: "If you hear a voice within you saying 'you are not a painter', then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." -Vincent VanGogh
Just one book? Impossible to choose. As a kid I loved Nancy Drew, Little House on The Prairie series, Charlotte's Web, The Secret Garden, Island of the Blue Dolphins....I spent hours and hours and hours reading as a kid. Any story that had a brave girl at its center had my heart. Same rings true today.
